Who Can Receive a Kidney Transplant?

A kidney transplant is considered for patients who have severe kidney dysfunction or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, not all patients with kidney failure are suitable candidates for a kidney transplant. Several factors determine eligibility, including medical, psychological, and logistical considerations.

Some Eligibility Criteria for Kidney Transplant


Medical Condition:

 End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): The patient must have severe kidney failure where the kidneys have lost about 90% of their function. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Advanced stages of CKD, often due to conditions like diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, or polycystic kidney disease.

General Health:

 The patient must be healthy enough to undergo major surgery. Absence of severe heart disease, lung disease, or other life-threatening conditions. No active infections that could interfere with the transplant process or recovery.

Age:

 While there is no strict age limit, candidates must be strong enough to withstand surgery and the long-term immunosuppressive therapy post-transplant. Each case is assessed individually

Body Weight:

 Patients who are severely overweight may need to lose weight before being considered for a transplant, as obesity can complicate both surgery and recovery.
