Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products, excess fluids, and electrolytes from the blood, which are then excreted in the urine. In CKD, this filtering ability progressively declines, leading to the accumulation of harmful substances in the body.
What are the symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often progresses slowly, and symptoms may not become apparent until the condition is advanced. Early stages may present no noticeable symptoms, making regular check-ups and monitoring crucial for at-risk individuals.
Regular monitoring of kidney function, especially in individuals with risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease, is crucial for early detection and management of CKD. Early intervention can help manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve the quality of life.
Early Stage Symptoms:
- Fatigue and Weakness: A common early sign due to the buildup of toxins and impurities in the blood.
- Poor Appetite: Loss of appetite can result from the accumulation of waste products in the body.
- Muscle weakness
- Swelling (Edema): Especially in the legs, ankles, feet, and sometimes in the face, caused by the kidneys' inability to remove excess fluid and salt.
- Increased Need to Urinate: Particularly at night (nocturia).
- Changes in Urine Output: This might include producing more or less urine than usual, or urine that is foamy or contains blood.
Advanced Stage Symptoms:
- Severe Fatigue and Weakness: Due to anemia, which is a common complication of CKD.
- Persistent Itching: Caused by the buildup of waste products in the blood.
- Nausea and Vomiting: Resulting from the accumulation of toxins in the blood.
- Loss of Appetite and Weight Loss: Severe waste buildup can affect appetite and metabolism.
- Muscle Cramps and Twitches: Due to electrolyte imbalances.
- Shortness of Breath: Can occur due to fluid buildup in the lungs or anemia.
